Takeaways from MODEX: RAIN RFID Beyond Retail

May 14, 2026 — Recently, Trilliott attended MODEX in Atlanta, the largest manufacturing and supply chain trade event in 2026. This year's event broke records with 50,000 registered visitors from 132 countries and 1,057 exhibitors showcasing solutions for logistics, automation, and material handling. We spoke with end-customers and integrators about their knowledge of and intentions for incorporating RAIN RFID in their manufacturing and supply chain operations. RAIN RFID is reaching a critical point of adoption for automation.
According to The RAIN Alliance, retail consumed over 80 percent of the 43 billion tags shipped in 2025. Vendor focus on RAIN RFID at MODEX is an excellent indicator that RAIN RFID is growing beyond retail mandates into industry automation. At the show we discussed RFID projects from RTLS (Real-Time Location Systems) and AIDC (Automatic Identification and Data Capture) in distribution and logistics, to inventory tracking in warehouses. Exhibitors acknowledged a lack of RFID software to meet their project goals, seeing Trilliott SmartSITE Digital Warehouse as an effective solution.
All at the show expect to realize efficiency gains from AI in robotics and automation. AI models require highly accurate data to generate meaningful results, and data captured with RFID underlies such accuracy. Many integrators mentioned replacing legacy barcode systems, which are shown to have an average inventory accuracy of only 63%, compared to over 95% with RFID. Furthermore, data captured with RFID is far richer with unique ids, additional standardized data fields, and a multiplicity of data samples that better define where assets are and what they're doing.
